The Ins and Outs of Debt Counseling

Share Debt counseling, also known as credit counseling, can be one of the most dynamic and effective ways available of getting out of debt without losing your house, your car, or your credit rating.

It can also be a horrible experience that ends up getting you deeper into debt.

Knowing the ins and outs of this burgeoning industry will help you as you try to navigate today’s tough economy while maintaining the lifestyle you enjoy.

Different debt counseling companies work in different ways, but one of the most common services that they offer is that of debt consolidation.

Debt consolidation is the process of merging all of the different loans that you have into one.  Once your loans are consolidated, all you have to do is send one payment to the credit counseling company each month, and they take care of sending out the money to your various creditors.

This has the advantage of simplifying your life and eliminating the hassle of having to deal with all of your creditors.

Another service that most debt counseling firms offer is that of negotiating with your creditors.

The firm will call up the people that you owe money to and negotiate with them in order to lower your interest, reduce your monthly payments, and in some cases even lessen the amount of money you owe.

This is an invaluable service, and it works better than you individually negotiating with your creditors for a couple of reasons.

First, a well established credit counseling company has spent years building up a professional relationship with the banks, medical companies, credit card companies, utilities, and other potential creditors in your area, so they can often get better results.

Second, since these people negotiate with creditors for a living, they are often much better at it than you yourself would be.

However, the most valuable service that counseling agencies can provide that of, as the name implies, counseling you about how to organize your financial life in order to reduce spending, save more, and come up with a comprehensive financial plan to guide you through the months and years to come.

This type of input can be invaluable, and many have been able to completely turn their spending habits around through contact with a credit counseling service.

However, credit counseling does have its share of drawbacks. If you choose a company that does not have your best interests in mind, you may find out that you actually owe more after counseling that you did before.

Find out more about credit card counseling.

You may also find that bankruptcy was really your best option, and trying to pay off your debts only worsens your financial problems.

There have even been cases where credit counseling companies take a client’s monthly payments and keep them for themselves instead of sending them to the client’s creditors

This is not to scare you away from a debt counseling program; this is just to impress upon you the need to do research before you get involved with any credit counseling business.

If you know someone who has used their services before, call them up and ask how they liked it and if they noticed anything fishy.

If not, call the company and ask for references. They should be able to connect you with satisfied customers who can give you a good perspective on the company.

Try to find a site online that reviews businesses, and see if they have anything on the company that you are considering. Often, these types of sites can be an invaluable resource for finding out how the company really treats its clients.

Following these steps, and then listening carefully to what the debt counseling company says, should keep you safe, and get you on your way to a debt-free life.
